Chocolate Protein Cream of Rice (Easy 5-Minute Recipe)
5 ingredients · 5 minutes· 1 serving
Warm, chocolatey, comforting AND ready in about five minutes?
This chocolate protein cream of rice is one of my favourite easy meals for colder weather whether you need something quick after training or you're craving a warm, satisfying dessert.
It's naturally gluten-free, affordable, easy to digest and made with just a handful of simple ingredients.
An Easy Post-Workout Protein + Carb Combo
One of the questions I hear from clients is how to better fuel their training and recovery.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
After resistance training, combining protein + carbohydrates gives our body important resources for recovery. Carbohydrates help replenish the fuel used during training, while protein provides the building blocks needed for muscle repair and growth.
That's especially relevant for women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, when maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important for our strength, body composition and metabolic health.
Cream of rice makes this REALLY easy.
It's a quick source of carbohydrate that's naturally gluten-free and easy to digest — and adding chocolate protein powder turns it into a simple post-workout meal in minutes.
Directions for Chocolate Protein Cream of Rice
Bring the almond milk to a boil in a small pot, then reduce the heat to low.
Combine the cream of rice, cocoa or cacao powder, salt, cinnamon and stevia. Slowly add the mixture to the simmering almond milk, stirring frequently until the porridge reaches your desired consistency. This takes ~5 minutes or less.
Remove from the heat.
If using protein powder, stir it in after cooking. Transfer to a bowl, add your favourite toppings and enjoy.
Ingredients
40 g dry cream of rice
1½ cups unsweetened almond milk
8g (~1 tbsp) unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder
Pinch of salt
Stevia, to taste
Optional: 40g chocolate whey isolate for added protein
Optional: ½ tsp vanilla extract
Optional toppings: berries, raisins, dates, banana, pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts or toasted coconut.
Not Just for Post-Workout
You definitely don't need to train to enjoy this one. Cream of rice also makes a warm, comforting alternative when you're craving something sweet. Add protein powder and your favourite toppings and you've got a satisfying cold-weather dessert with protein and an easy-to-digest whole-food starch built right in.
Because supportive nutrition doesn't always need to be complicated. Sometimes it's just a warm bowl of chocolatey goodness on a cold day.
Notes for Chocolate Protein Cream of Rice:
Where can I find cream of rice cereal? You can grind your own using any long- or short-grain white rice using a spice grinder or in your cereal aisle.
Can I make this ahead for meal prep? Yes! Reheat for a warm bowl of cream of rice, or chilled from the fridge.
